Important Considerations When Integrating M-Pesa Payments

Mobile money is central to how Kenyan businesses get paid. Integrating it properly into a POS, website or business application requires more than connecting to an API and waiting for a callback.

Start with the right M-Pesa arrangement

Integrations depend on the business having an appropriate M-Pesa arrangement — for example a paybill or till number — and access to Daraja API credentials. The requirements are issued to the business, not to the software developer, so this is usually the first thing to confirm.

Design for the unhappy paths

A payment can fail, time out, be reversed, or succeed after the customer closes the page. Good integrations handle each case explicitly:

  • Show clear status to the customer while a request is pending.
  • Verify transactions on the server, never only in the browser.
  • Store provider references so payments can be matched later.
  • Retry safe operations and alert a human when something does not reconcile.

Reconciliation is the real deliverable

At the end of the day, the amounts received in M-Pesa must match the sales recorded in your system. If matching requires a person to compare two lists manually, the integration is incomplete. Design the reconciliation report from the beginning.

Keep credentials safe

API keys and passkeys belong in server-side configuration, never in mobile apps, front-end code or shared documents. Rotate them if there is any suspicion of exposure.

Done well, M-Pesa integration reduces cash handling, speeds up checkout and gives owners a trustworthy view of daily receipts. Done poorly, it creates a new pile of unexplained discrepancies.
